OD-KFK Claim Malaysia: How It Works and Will You Lose NCD?

If another driver hits your car and the accident wasn't your fault, you might assume that you have to claim directly from the other driver's insurance company. That's not always the case. In Malaysia, you may be able to make an Own Damage Knock-for-Knock, commonly known as an OD-KFK claim, through your own insurance company. An OD-KFK claim allows you to claim for damage to your vehicle through your own insurer when another party is responsible for the accident, subject to the applicable conditions. Instead of dealing directly with the other driver's insurer for your vehicle repairs, you deal with your own insurer, which can make the process more straightforward.

How Does an OD-KFK Claim Work?

Imagine you're driving normally when another car changes lanes and hits your vehicle. If the evidence and investigation establish that the other driver was at fault, you may be eligible to submit an OD-KFK claim to your own insurer. You will usually need to report the accident, make a police report, notify your insurer and provide the required documents and evidence. Your insurer will then assess the claim and determine whether it qualifies as an OD-KFK claim. If approved, your vehicle can proceed with the repair process according to your insurer's claims procedure. The important difference is that although you're claiming through your own insurance company, the accident is being treated as one where another party was responsible.

Will an OD-KFK Claim Affect Your NCD?

This is usually the biggest concern for Malaysian drivers. If your OD-KFK claim meets the required conditions and you are found not to be at fault, your No Claim Discount (NCD) should generally not be affected. This is one of the main advantages of using the OD-KFK route instead of making a normal Own Damage claim. A normal Own Damage claim may result in the loss of your NCD, depending on the circumstances. With an eligible OD-KFK claim, you are claiming through your own insurer while preserving your NCD. However, don't assume that every accident involving another vehicle automatically qualifies for OD-KFK. Eligibility depends on the circumstances of the accident and the insurer's assessment, so it is always better to confirm with your insurer before proceeding.

What Is the Difference Between Own Damage and OD-KFK?

An Own Damage claim is generally used when you claim against your own comprehensive motor insurance for damage to your own vehicle. For example, if you accidentally hit a pillar while parking, you may decide to make an Own Damage claim.

OD-KFK is different because another identifiable party is responsible for the accident. You still submit the claim through your own insurer, but the claim is handled on the basis that you were not responsible for the collision and the necessary conditions are satisfied. This difference matters because a normal Own Damage claim can affect your NCD, while an eligible OD-KFK claim generally allows you to keep it.

Why Would You Claim Through Your Own Insurer?

After an accident, dealing with another driver's insurer can feel unfamiliar, especially if you've never made a motor claim before. With OD-KFK, you can deal with your own insurance company instead. Your insurer already has your policy information and can explain its claim requirements, repair procedure and documents needed. For many drivers, having one familiar point of contact can make the process easier to understand. That doesn't mean every OD-KFK claim will be quick or uncomplicated. The insurer still needs to verify the circumstances of the accident and confirm that the claim meets the necessary requirements.

What Should You Do After the Accident?

The first few hours after an accident can make a difference to how smoothly your claim goes. Once everyone is safe, collect as much information as reasonably possible at the scene. Take clear photos of the vehicles, damage, road position and surrounding area. If you have dashcam footage, save a copy so it isn't overwritten. Exchange the necessary details with the other driver and make your police report within the required timeframe. You should also contact your insurer as soon as possible instead of arranging repairs on your own without checking the claims procedure. Your insurer can then advise whether the accident may qualify for an OD-KFK claim and tell you where to send the vehicle for inspection or repair.

Can Every Accident Be Claimed Under OD-KFK?

No. OD-KFK isn't automatically available simply because two vehicles were involved in an accident. The circumstances of the accident, the parties involved, insurance status and available evidence can affect whether the claim qualifies. There may also be situations where liability isn't immediately clear. For example, both drivers may give different versions of what happened. In cases like this, supporting evidence such as dashcam footage, photographs and the police investigation can become particularly important. This is why it's better to ask your insurer specifically whether your case qualifies for OD-KFK rather than assuming that it does.

What Happens If the Other Driver Has No Insurance?

This can make the situation more complicated. OD-KFK has eligibility requirements, and problems with the other vehicle's insurance can affect the claim route available to you. If you discover that the other vehicle is uninsured or there is uncertainty about its insurance status, contact your insurer and explain the situation. Your insurer can advise you on the available claim options based on your policy and the circumstances of the accident. Avoid choosing a claim route purely because you want to protect your NCD. It is better to understand how each option will affect your coverage, NCD and possible out-of-pocket costs before deciding how to proceed.

How Long Does an OD-KFK Claim Take?

There isn't one fixed timeframe that applies to every OD-KFK claim. The process can depend on how quickly the required documents are submitted, whether liability is clear, the extent of the vehicle damage, assessment requirements, spare-part availability and the repairer's workload. A relatively straightforward accident with clear evidence may be easier to process than an accident where the drivers disagree about what happened. If your car is already at the workshop, ask for updates on both the claim approval and repair progress. Claim approval and the actual time needed to repair the vehicle are not necessarily the same thing.

Being involved in a car accident is stressful enough without having to figure out unfamiliar insurance terms at the same time. The easiest way to remember OD-KFK is this: when another party is responsible for the accident, you may be able to claim through your own insurer instead of claiming directly from the other party's insurer. Most importantly, an eligible OD-KFK claim generally does not result in the loss of your NCD. However, eligibility depends on the circumstances of the accident, so always confirm the claim route with your insurer before proceeding. Knowing the difference between Own Damage and OD-KFK before an accident happens can save you a lot of confusion when you actually need to make a claim.
